How To Choose The Right Home Builder

Family talking with builder at construction site.

Choosing a home builder is a huge decision. There is compatibility to keep in mind—design sensibility and budget —and then there is the question of whether you will be investing in a property that endures. It is essential to consider if your chosen builder has a good reputation, if you are compatible enough to work together, and if you trust them. Whether you’re looking to build in Nova Scotia or elsewhere, the following points will help guide you on your home-building journey.

A Google search of custom home builders in your preferred area will bring up a list of options. From there, the results that pop up will show you a builder’s:

  • Years of experience
  • Contact information
  • Client testimonials
  • Reputation in the form of online reviews

Visiting their websites and reviewing comments and reviews are critical ways of getting to know your options.

Review Portfolios

Reviewing their website and concentrating on their portfolio section, get a feel for what styles a builder does best. This section should include galleries that highlight previous custom show homes. Take your time and notice their design type, the size of homes they work on, and what they specialize in. Finally, ask yourself if both your design preferences match one another.

Visit Builds

You have curated a short list of top custom home builders. Now it is time to visit their work. You can do this in one of two ways, informally and formally:

  • Informally: Take a trip to the homes they have built in the past and look at their lots, their design, and the communities in which they are located.
  • Formally: Visit their presentation centre and show home, if they have them, and book a tour. I recommend this option!

Tip: Before visiting a builder’s presentation centre, inquire if you need a reservation.  As you move forward and interview builders, keep a list of consistent questions handy that you will ask each one. This makes for easy comparison! The type of builder you want to work with will care about your questions and will be happy to answer them thoroughly and openly. The best builders will offer up information without being asked. Part of their job is to make you feel comfortable, after all.  Need suggestions on fantastic Builders in the Halifax area? Call me today, and I will guide you in the right direction.
